The fountain in full

Posted by Will Entrekin on April 15, 2008

These’ll be the last in this series; I’ve got no other pictures of the fountain.

It’s a rather unremarkable fountain, now I think of it. What really counts is how you see it.

Let’s step back a bit

Posted by Will Entrekin on April 11, 2008

I’ve often thought that understanding of quantum mechanics (not to mention the universe) is a matter of perspective; we’re too big to really observe an atom, too small to see the universe (except in increments of, what, a few hundred yards, at best?). Point is, I realized my previous labels were off; those weren’t pictures of fountains so much as pictures of fountain water.

These are pictures of a fountain:

And just to prove it’s the same fountain:

Interesting to note it’s the first time you’ve really seen it, isn’t it?

Einstein’s fountain

Posted by Will Entrekin on April 5, 2008

There’s an old story that once, while walking around Princeton’s campus, Albert Einstein paused to observe a water fountain and found his attention completely captivated. I think I read in a Reader’s Digest that a fellow ambler recalled seeing Einstein watching a fountain while waving his hand before his eyes, and that his fascination ultimately led Einstein to the theory of light being made up of discrete quanta that behave as both particles and waves.

I wonder what Einstein saw.

Edit: I had to remove one because I accidentally deleted one of the pictures from Photobucket.

Bars like hard geometry

Posted by Will Entrekin on April 3, 2008

I’ve noticed, in taking pictures, I like explicit angles and their intersections. Bars, especially:

Geometry, when it doesn’t involves theorems and proofs, is beautiful.
